Surface transport vehicles and facilities, have been frequent targets of terrorist attacks, hijackings, and sabotage around the world. By their very nature, these systems need to be open and accessible, having thousands of entry points - leaving them vulnerable to attack.
Approximately one-third of all terrorist attacks worldwide target surface transportation systems, with the weapon of choice usually being explosives. Attacks are relatively evenly split between rail systems (trains, subways, stations, and rails) and bus systems. Paris subways; Israeli buses, English railway and subways, Spanish trains have all been targeted, with the Sarin gas on Tokyo's subway raising the bar by introducing WMD into the terrorist arsenal.
ASI has developed an integrated and multi use security strategy that protects surface transportation against terrorism while improves passenger safety, service efficiency and convenience, and reducing crime.
By learning from past tactics and collecting intelligence on future threats, it is possible to apply security measures that: help detect and deter attacks; raise the likelihood that terrorists will be apprehended; and improve emergency and consequence management to limit casualties and disruptions. The ASI integrated approach includes:
· Access Control
· Planning, Procedures and Coordination
· Security Personnel Training
· Staff and Passenger Awareness Training
· Technological & Physical Security
